MLA
Meat and Livestock Australia
Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) represents the beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat producers of Australia and manages research and development, marketing and promotions on behalf of the industry. MLA has a long term commitment to providing all Australians with evidence-based nutrition information and promotes the role of lean red meat as part of a healthy, balanced diet.
MLA Nutrition is Meat & Livestock Australia’s Nutrition Centre, run by a team of qualified dietitians. MLA’s nutrition programs aim to educate consumers on the health benefits of eating lean red meat and to support nutrition science research to find out more about red meat’s role in human health and healthy diets.
Lean red meat plays an important role in a healthy diet for all Australians, in particular children, adolescents and the elderly. It is a nutrient-dense food and a valuable source of haem-iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and long-chain omega-3s. After fish, red meat makes the second highest contribution of omega-3s to the Australian diet. A little known fact is that lean red meat (beef, lamb and veal) is an important natural source of long-chain omega-3s.
Through MLA’s nutrition program, we communicate the valuable role lean red meat plays in the Australian diet, its important contribution to nutrient intake, including omega-3s and the health and wellbeing benefits of including lean red meat 3-4 times a week.
