Omega-3s help prevent all-cause mortality and CVD events
A new study examined the effect of long chain omega-3 supplementation on all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in elderly men at high-risk of cardiovascular disease.
Omega-3s linked to younger biological age
Researchers from San Francisco have found a potentially new link between omega-3 fatty acids and the aging process in patients with coronary heart disease.
American College of Cardiology reviews omega-3s
A review of long chain omega-3s and cardiovascular protection, written by expert Dr Carl Lavie, was published by the American College of Cardiology. The review concludes “based on considerable evidence, the target EPA + DHA consumption should be at least 500 mg/day for individuals without overt CV diseases, and at least 800-1000 mg/day for individuals with known CHD and HF.” These recommendations are consistent with the National Heart Foundation of Australia's recommendations.
Omega-3s and heart failure
A new prospective study of 39 367 middle-aged and older Swedish men found a moderate intake of long chain omega-3s was associated with lower rates of heart failure and interestingly a higher intake of omega-3s was not found to have an additional benefit.
Moderate fish consumption reduces blood pressure
The study included an 8 week intervention of 324 subjects randomized to one of four energy-restricted diets: salmon (150 g three times per week, resulting in a daily consumption of 2.1 g of long chain omega-3s), cod (150 g three times per week, 0.3 g of long chain omega-3s per day), fish oil capsules (1.3 g of long chain omega-3s per day), or control (sunflower oil capsules, no seafood).
Newcastle University publishes on omega-3s & plant sterols
Both EPA & DHA recommended for cardiovascular prevention
Von Schacky reviewed omega-3 ethyl esters (EPA and DHA) for cardiovascular prevention. Although slight differences in biological activity exist between EPA and DHA, both exert a number of positive actions against atherosclerosis and its complications.
Foods containing omega-3s help to lower blood pressure
The International Study of Macro- and Micro-nutrients and Blood Pressure (INTERMAP) is an international cross-sectional epidemiologic study of 4680 men and women aged 40 to 59 yrs from 17 population-based samples in China, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States.
Long chain omega-3 supplementation almost doubles walking distance
Madden et al provided 1g EPA and 0.7g DHA/day from fish oil for 12 weeks to patients with claudication secondary to peripheral arterial disease - an atherosclerotic disease.
