Prof Philip Calder, an inflammation specialist from the University of South Hampton in the UK and Prof Clemens Von Schacky co-developer of the Omega-3 Index from the University of Munich, Germany. We will also be communicating the outcomes of our latest scientific consensus report on omega-3s for baby boomers. A program and registration form will be available shortly.

The inaugural Omega-3 Symposium linked the science of Omega-3s to potential claims for
Omega-3 containing foods. It was convened by The Omega-3 Centre and ILSI Australasia.
On 31 October marketers, nutritionists, regulators and scientists met at the State Library of Victoria Theatrette in Melbourne to discuss:
Long Chain Omega-3s - the science, recommendations for intake and making general level health claims
The objectives of the Symposium were:
To discuss the science for long chain Omega-3s, their roles in the body and recommendations for intake. To progress understanding of the issues and processes involved in the substantiation of general level health claims
The Program:
Professor Paul Nestel, President, ILSI Australasia welcomed delegates and introduced
Ms Wendy Morgan, Executive Director of the new Omega-3 Centre, who introduced the audience to Omega-3 fatty acids and the new Centre.

Invited speakers included:
Professor Sandra Capra, Head, School of Health Sciences, Newcastle University who discussed new official NHMRC recommendations for intakes of long chain Omega-3s - and how to reach them. PDF
The Chair EU Health Claims Working Group, Professor J J (Sean) Strain, University of Ulster, who informed the audience of developments in food regulations, health claims and Omega-3s from a UK and EU perspective. PDF
Dr Dorothy Mackerras, Chief Public Health Nutrition Advisor, FSANZ discussed proposed changes to Australian and NZ food regulations related to Omega-3s.
Well known nutritionist, Ms Catherine Saxelby, outlined where consumers are now in relation to their understanding about Omega-3s.
